Riding for Colin
On October 15, I'm participating in rideAtaxia to cure Friedreich’s ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life shortening neuromuscular disease with no treatment or cure. I'll be riding in honor of my son Colin who suffers with FA and can't ride his bike any more. In fact he now needs to use a scooter or wheel chair whenever he is out of the house now. I’ll ride with local FA families, friends and cycling enthusiasts to redefine what is possible in FA research
The route I'll be Riding is 25 miles through the hills of Pennsylvania. I'm told "be ready for lots of hills." I've been Riding all the big hills around to get ready. The other day when I thought wow my butt is sore....I then thought I'll bet Colin's butt is sore too, as I was helping him get up after he fell walking to the bathroom (he falls more lately and now uses his walker all the time at home.)
rideATAXIA was founded by Kyle Bryant, a young man with FA. Kyle redefined what was possible in his life when he took up recumbent cycling. He says after training for and completing his first century ride, "I can't even walk down the street, but I rode 100 miles in a day. After that the sky was the limit." Since 2007, rideATAXIA has raised over $5 million to fund FA research progress.
